The last threee months of psychiatrist Berthold Grünfelds life. A famous 75-year-old psychiatrist, Berthold Grünfeld is diagnosed with cancer pancreas. He accepts his daughter Nina to follow him through his last five months. He who has always helped and analysed others now tries to analyse him self, not wanting to die.
The personal, investigative portrait of one’s own father or mother has eventually developed into a subgenre of documentary film. Director Nina Grünfeld has set out to unravel the story behind her father’s family. It becomes, literally speaking, a journey back to childhood, as suspenseful as any detective story, yet intimate and harrowing. For what does one really gain by discovering one’s unknown past?
In 2005 Berthold and Nina made the film Origin Unknown, searching for Bertholds roots.
The film has Norwegian dialogue and English subtitles.
“The Dying Doctor” is the second film in a trilogy of personal documentaries, where the first film is Origin unknown (2005) and the third is Nina’s Children (2015).
